Brazilian Instruments / Instrumentos - Timba (Timbau / Timbal)
The Brazilian version of the djembe! Can be worn with a strap or placed on the floor or in a stand for stage shows. The great Bahian percussionist Carlinhos Brown is credited with popularising this drum with his group Timbalada and the instrument is now common in the blocos afro of Salvador. More recently even some of the samba schools of Rio have been using the drum in the increasingly adventurous search for "creativity" that will find favour with the carnival judges.
